This is from back in 2009 on my hike in the Peak District. Being the animal lover I am, I kept deviating from the group's path and jumping at every opportunity to catch one of these cute creatures :))

Autumn colors at the historic Cedar Creek Grist Mill near Woodland, Washington. Constructed in 1876, the mill still produces flour, corn meal, and apple cider using the original milling processes.

Out on an outing with John, Pat, and Chad. While I took the requisite standard shot from the bridge, the moss on these trees in the foreground was too much to ignore. A bit of lingering fog helped to even out the lighting.

Peace, my heart, let the time for the parting be sweet.
Let it not be a death but completeness.
Let love melt into memory and pain into songs.
Let the flight through the sky end in the folding of the wings over the nest.
Let the last touch of your hands be gentle like the flower of the night.
Stand still, O Beautiful End, for a moment, and say your last words in silence.
I bow to you and hold up my lamp to light you on your way.

The Black Tern is a "Species at Risk" in Ontario. I was directed to an out-of-the-way cattail marsh by a birdwatcher friend where these terns appear to be nesting.

Man - are these things tough to photograph in flight! Trying to keep the focus tracking on these birds is a real challenge - when they are flying straight at you they have a very thin profile and the focus has trouble locking on and even when you get them side-on they continuously bob, weave and make sudden banking turns that are near impossible to predict - I found the best thing to do was let them dive into the water, then lock-on and catch them on thier way back up into the air...

Dear Global Climate Change,

I really really really don't like you ;)

This has been the hottest and driest year on record in most parts of Texas. It's almost October, and it was 101 today in Austin. 90 days over 100 degrees and 156 over 90 this year. We actually had some rain today and hopefully it was the last 100 degree day of the year, as a "cold front" is blowing in. As I type it's actually a little wet outside and theres a bit off fall in the air! I've been waiting for this for what feels like forever. I'm soooooo in the mood for some cool crisp air and a nice fall day :)

There were really beautiful clouds this afternnon as some rain thought about moving in...and I was lucky to be near a high spot with a great view of the Austin skyline to capture them.

To me...this is what something starting to change looks like. And I'm all smiles :)

Via Flickr:
I had a bit of a walkabout in London yesterday and finally managed to take a shot of the Gherkin that was worthy enough to post. I find it such a difficult structure to shoot. The way it's positioned makes it difficult to isolate. I was trying not to shoot it in the symmetrical straight up manner as well but it's tough finding a fresh viewpoint on it, I guess because of the way it's shaped. Hopefully I've managed to give a unique spin to it.

This is the 3rd or 4th time now that I've headed to London to shoot this and it's the only time the weather has played nice and I've come away with a decent image. It can be so frustrating when you put in so much time and come away with nothing and yet, so satisfying when things come together just right. The ups and downs of photography - check out Andy Brown's entertaining post on this very topic.

Here's to a good week ahead.

Last week's trip to Hidden Peaks was somewhat disappointing. There was no reward for lugging 45 pounds of gear and food in the back country (though the view was still awesome at 7000 ft). No sunset nor sunrise photography. No astrophotography. The ideas I had just had to wait another week.

This weekend, I drove to Oregon with my cousins and siblings. Car camping this time. Trillium Lake was our first option, but all of the spots including 18 first-come-first-serve spots were taken. A quick call to the ranger station and we found us a spot at Clear Lake. The view wasn't as spectacular as the view from Trillium Lake. Still, we had plenty of fun, good food, and plenty of photo op.

The photo above was taken during our second night. Thanks to my cousin and his girlfriend; they were patient enough to stay still for 30 seconds with bugs swarming their faces.

Malta is so hot.

I don't think I've ever been in such stifling heat before! Walking around anytime between 10am and 4pm was out of the question unfortunately due to the heat so I wasn't able to scope out the place as much as I'd like.

It's a rather surreal place. A tiny island smack in the middle of the Mediterranean. Most people there spoke Italian and Malti but there are still signs of British rule everywhere: people drive on the left side of the road, there are places called Clapham Junction and Victoria and even the beer is sold in pints.

I saw only wisps of clouds in the 5 days we were there. The rest of the time, the sky was completely clear and sunny. It's a very dry, very rocky island - brilliant for long exposures! The coast is peppered with these ladders that help you into the water off the rocks, which is great since they make such intriguing subjects.

I'm a little gutted I didn't manage to shoot as much as I'd like but I'm glad to be back. Hope you've all had a great weekend.

This uber-cool view is commonly seen and an obvious choice for this location. A little too wide for my wide angle lens; an extra mm or two would have been nice as 12mm wasn't enough.

I had a bit of a trade-off to make here. I would have liked to show the violent nature of the falls themselves with all of that water churning over the brink, but at the same time, get the swirlie pool of water below. In the end I went for the swirlie pool using a 64x (6-stop) ND filter.
