I had the pleasure of meeting up with David and company this weekend on a trip into the gorge for some wildflowers. Unfortunately neither the flowers nor the clouds were very cooperative, but it was still a fun trip and a chance to visit several places I had never been to before.

While I'm probably more of a 'people' photographer than anything else, I do have a fondness for architectural shots as well. :-)
This is the magnificent spiral staircase at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh, of which I've posted a number of other photographs, which you can see here:
Usher Hall Spiral Staircase
I took this after the end of Madeleine Peyroux's concert last night. In most shots I've taken of this, the 'eye' at the top is blindingly white (because it's daylight outside), but the light is more balanced when it is dark outside.
Having said that, most of my shots of this staircase have tended to be a labour of love, involving multiple processing of the same RAW file, as well as numerous adjustment layers, combined with layer masking...and this one is no exception.
However, it a magnificent piece of architecture and well worth the undignified position I found myself in while I was taking this shot. Hey, you have to suffer for your art, even if it's only some mild ridicule from passers-by. :-)

This week I'm telling the story of the otter/coyote encounter from New Year's Eve, in pictures.
I was out watching three otters in the Lamar Valley in the afternoon, having snowshoed out to where the Lamar River was still thawed out in places.
The otters were diving in and out of the water looking for fish when someone else made a surprise appearance...

THIRD PLACE
Congrats on being voted 3rd place in the weekly photo contest with this stunning photo Tom, WOW!

We were fortunate enough to have an epic sunrise on our four-day photographic expedition to Death Valley. A huge thanks goes to Jim for providing me with necessary information on locating some salt patterns. The main visitor's area in the Badwater basin sometimes floods in the winter months and dissolves all of the patterns. They are only starting to regenerate, a process which will take many months. Typically the best time of year to see these formations is in the autumn.
A 3-stop Singh-Ray hard GND was used for this one. Even with 3 stops, I almost blew out the red channel in the sky. My new Singh-Ray filters performed admirably on this trip and I have now retired my entire collection of Cokin filters.
In case you are wondering how these form, I found this article offering some wisdom on the subject: findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1134/is_7_110/ai_78334669/
